You would think having years of experience with the product would be helpful when sitting an exam. In general that is true, but it means that some questions you end up looking too deeply. Some questions appear to be too straightforward. Some questions are on areas you would barely use over the lifetime of the product.
This raises a question – does this make the Microsoft certification process a bit of a lottery?
I don’t think so. In many ways these types of questions accurately reflect the day to day experience of someone who is (or aims to be) an MCSE. Some questions you get asked every day are really easy to answer. Some questions are so obscure you have to make an educated guess. The exam reflects real life.
Having said all that, I have yet to see anyone use RIP or OSPF on Windows Server. I’ll be happy if I never have to answer another question on these protocols again!

The Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) on Windows Server 2003 credential is intended for IT professionals who work in the typically complex computing environment of medium-sized to large companies. An MCSE candidate should have at least one year of experience implementing and administering a network operating system in environments that have the following characteristics:
250 to 5,000 or more users
Three or more physical locations
Three or more domain controllers
Network services and resources such as messaging, database, file and print, proxy server, firewall, Internet, intranet, remote access, and client computer management
Connectivity requirements such as connecting branch offices and individual users in remote locations to the corporate network and connecting corporate networks to the Internet
In addition, an MCSE candidate should have at least one year of experience in the following areas:
Implementing and administering a desktop operating system
Designing a network infrastructure
Mirror For Japan, EU, UAE, China, Au, Ru, SA, Brazil and Sing…
